The BLACK CRAYONS were Born out of LOS ANGELES, started off by ALFONSO "PONCHO" CONTRERAS (GUITARS/VOCALS) AND JULIAN ANDERLE (GUITARS/VOCALS). The two met in Santa Monica, California in the early 90's. Both uninterested in the mainstream and radio bubblegum rock that was flooding the 90's. They turned to the vintage sound of the 60's and 70's. Both of them being guitar players they quickly turned to the manuals left behind by bands such as: The Velvet Underground, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Faith, Cream. The Doors, The band - Allman Bros, The Bryds, Country Joe & The Fish, Strawberry Alarm Clock, The Kinks, The Electric Prunes,13 Floor Elevators, Love, Syd Barret ...You get the picture..
They recorded and produced their first EP in 2006 "BABYLON TX." Under the name BLACKGRASS, with the help of Engineer/co-producer BRIAN SESKO. The two lacking band members at the time decided to take on the project themselves and between them finished the record. JULIAN plays acoustic/electric guitars/rhodes keys/perc/back up vocals. PONCHO plays acoustic/electric guitars/bass/drums/harp and lead vocals.
In love with the PSYCHEDELIC/FOLK/ROCK SOUND that is making it's glorious return, they decided to start a full band project. They are currently working on their next album "RETURN TO THE COSMIC UTERUS AND BE REBORN". They will begin recording later this summer (2008).
