"Now, rather excitingly, the musical maverick is back. Empowered by t’internet, a new generation of musicians can be as experimental as they like without having to worry about how it sounds to an A&R man. One such artist is Pilgrim Speakeasy, who combines the funkadelics of Parliament with a political and mystical message, the likes of which HOLV has never heard."
(from an interview with Heaven or Las Vegas music magazine)
"...experimental and creative, the melding of funk sounds with world music and hard rock into a celebration of musical exploration. I like this disc a lot – and if you give it a chance, you probably will, too. "
-Gary Hill. (Music Street Journal review of the Moon Emperor album.)
...Drawing from the worlds sound sources Pilgrim Speakeasy mixes an eclectic blend of instruments and vibrations into a groove ridden mellodic and lyrical sonic tapestry with an underlying theme of Evolution ... The album 'Moon Emperor' epitomises such eclecticism from west african kora/percussion and accoustic mellowness of the title track to the hard and heavy funkadelic rock /synth of 'Lev''to the uptempo catchyness of opener 'Radiators'. These recordings have been entirely performed ,recorded and produced by Pilgrim Speakeasy somewhare near the arctic circle.
The year 2008 sees the completion of Pilgrim Speakeasy's fifth album 'ANARCHITECTURE', a typically eclectic mix of grooves, fluid melodies and power, with a uniqueness of feel encompassing experimental leanings...a freedom from singular forms....Anarchitecture.

Pilgrim Speakeasy’s music comes over like the lovechild of Funkadelic, world music and a cosmic third Party with drinks served by Neitzsche and whatever was behind the Lau Tsu.......
Fonkadelic..edgy..hugely..groovy..earthy and raw...dancing melodies encompassing socio-cosmic poetry with foreys into psychadelia..world..and occasionaly electro synthdom.

Recorded in 2002 on a 2nd hand digital 8 track this album takes Pilgrim Speakeasy's sound away from the chaotic Analogue freedoms (and limitations) into the digital era. At this time band performance was limited to occasional gigs usualy in Brixton - south London, but always fantastic nights of energy tranferance. As one enthusiastically captivated witness put it after a show "What you did up there mate....that was out of order !" The song Vibrations (Moon Emperor) always seems to get things happening. This album also features the awesome power of Lola's vocals on Perfect imperfections.

Recorded in 2001 in London and Scotland, 'PLAYTHINGS' is classic Speakeasy, recorded, like the JAMS FOR LAMBS album before it on 4 track recorder it similarly contains a wide variety of parts squeezed inventivly together, the opener 'THE GOOD NEWS' exemplifies the multi-layered arangements that typify the PILGRIM SPEAKEASY sound. From the accoustic mellowness of 'EYES OF I , the dubby groove of 'DRIFTMAN'' to the off the wallness of 'SUPERFISH 'and edges of 'THE MAIN EVENT' and 'BIBLE JOHN'. Always prevailent in PS expression is a strong lyrical content heard here in 'SERVICE SECTOR SADNESS'
1.GOOD NEWS - 2.THE MAIN EVENT - 3.EYES OF I - 4.SPILT FAITH - 5.MESSENGER - 6.COUNTRYSTYLE - 7.LOVERIGHT 8.BIBLE JOHN - 9.DRIFT MAN - 10.SERVICE SECTOR SADNESS - 11.SUPERFISH - 12.SEE U IN THE SUNSHINE
Jams For Lambs...an oldie but a goldie. Recorded in London Town in 1999 on 4 tracks of pure analogue magic upon which were squeezed entire ensembles of all kinds of different organised noize..theres an ice cream van in there somewhare too..This album is the soul of Pilgrim Speakeasy...
The cover pic. was taken by Monty Strikes on a hill in Cornwall, shortly before riting off a hire car ....drudging through the pouring rain ...and sleeping in a cave...those were the days..
