1967 HAIGHT ASHBURY TRIBUNE Front & Back; Sumerian Star Gods Intervening in Man's Creation - by John Thompson
On October 16 & 17 San Francisco's huge A.P.E. Alternative Press Exposition featured hundreds of hyper creative counter cultural worker bees filling a vast hive Exposition Hall with honey for the eyes.
As a bona fide "Underground Press Syndicate" artist/writer from the Psychedelic Sixties my assignment was to sniff out the most lysergic works of ingenuity and report back to Psychedelic Central. In the mid Sixties Haight Ashbury/Berkeley a small group of us launched the S.F. Bay Area Alternaive Press scene, which flowers magnificently these daze.
My judyhurley.com "mate" and I (artopea.com) were dazzled by all the talent, and came up with our personal TOP SIX whose text content & unique graphic style seemed the most "psychedelic." Judy and I were among the first to have our work labeled "Psychedelic" back then, and my posters & comics gained attention, but as nearly all young women artists back then were not taken seriously (like my friend Rick's gorgeous wife Ida Griffin), Judy 's work went unpublished (SF's first woman bartender at Vessuvio's "back in the day", then owning her own North Beach bar, Paradise, a renowned hangout for local artist/writers).
So these are our Seven Top Favorites:
1. NUMERO UNO es Brian y Aaron a americanclockwork.com Maestro Aaron Rodriquez upcoming Graphic Novel, with artiste Brian, has truly the depth of story material that is both risky and challenging even to attempt.
2. NUMBER TWO is Lotus Root Children (epidigm.net) whose classical mastery of Chinese graphics focuses on a tale that deserves the spotlight these young artists offer.
3. jimblachard.com amazed the alternative press as soon as he levitated inside its pages radiating Blue Cheer. His teen genius in genius first pages evolved into meticulously textures masterpieces, all done listening to his favorite bands up in Washington State. Listen to his ah ! some music!
4.THE SLOW POISONER is www.ognerstump.com. As a teenager Andrew Goldfarb drew and drew Andrew, evolving truly into a Golden Farb. His psycheeeeeedelic site IS pure gold.
5. jonvermilyea.com is a nouveau emerging maestro di psychedelia avec un nom Francaise. His hand made luv products could get investors rich if they bought them at his bargain prices.
6. Andrew and drew and drew Ristiano es di maestro skronked.com whose pages are the most psychedelic thing to appear from San Jose's legendary Slave Labor Graphics.
7. BIKINIKAT entertained all potential clients with the most psychedelically enticing booth at this vast exposition. Like other under appreciated free males Genevieve tsai (IITS-Comic.blogspot.com) phoebe gloeckner & jenifervaughnart.com, BIKINIKAT is under appreciated by men who dont stop long enough to pet the cute fur on their creativity.
