The Red Plastic Buddha's debut album 'Sunflower Sessions' affords this great Chicago psychedlic band an opportunity to reach out and grab the ears of a wider audience. Their mix of classic psychedelia and Who or Creation-like power, coupled with massive vocals, is a potent combination that propels this collection of songs along and ensures that they lodge in your brain.
Opening track 'Forget Me Not' is a surefire enticement to sample the delights contained within. It has a simple riff with big drums and a chanted unison vocal, that collectively add up to an off kilter belter off a song that could almost be called pop, if that didn't conjure up a notion of throwaway nonsense that this clearly isn't. 'Rollercoaster' has a sinister edge to it with a signature guitar riff augmented by atmospheric vibraphone sounds that blend with a drum figure that naggingly rolls around the tom toms, all rounded off with cool organ sounds. 'Over And Over' is a mid tempo ballad with great vocal harmonies on the choruses and once again, a simple guitar figure and solo that proves that less less is more. The final Track, 'Gingerbread Pornography' is a live cut that serves as a fine example of how RPB sound in front of an audience and is an enticement to check 'em out if they're in your area.
Red Plastic Buddha are a very tight sounding band, who know how to write good hooky songs, with great psych-tinged arrangements and understand the power of simplicity. They deserve to progress and attract a wider audience and this album is highly recommended.
